This holiday season many of us will be doing more of our shopping online instead of in person. Making sure that we do it safely and securely may help our shopping be less stressful. These tips can help.

Making sure that we do it safely and securely may help our shopping be less stressful.
  • Device Security
Make sure that the operating system, security software, and browser is up to date on each device that you will use to shop. If you use an app, make sure it is up to date, too.

  • Network Security
Make sure that your internet connection and wi-fi is secure. Don't use public wi-fi because it can be less secure. If you must use a public wi-fi connection use a virtual private network (VPN).

  • Site Security
Look for indications that the site is secure such as a closed padlock and the address beginning with https. Look at the information for the site by clicking on the padlock or other indicator which is typically on the left of the address bar. For logging into accounts use two-factor authentication (which typically uses a one-time use code) where possible.

  • Shopping
Shop only at sites that you trust. Watch for twists on a store name such as misspellings, or not using .com. Avoid scams by going directly to a site instead of clicking on an ad or search result.

  • Paying
Use a credit card or secure payment system such as PayPal instead of a debit card. Using a prepaid debit card is another option. Don't save your payment information on a site.
